Entry: Requiem for a dream Saturday, September 24, 2005

I have always rated David Lynch as one of the most original of directors and a master at noir. But I now place him second to Darren Arnofosky. The movie has the simplest of themes with absolutely no plot...deals with something all of us know about. Imagine making a movie out of the one liner "smoking is injurious to health". Blow it a hundred times...voila...you get Requiem for a dream. A movie all about drug addiction , drugs being generic...from prescription to abuse, its got em all. What is so great....and i say great about the movie is the soundtrack, the use of powerful camera techniques, brilliant editing.

Its like a magnet ...one is so engrossed viewing the movie...you can get robbed right under your nose and never know. The music ...just sucks you in...it is composed of the pedestrian sounds heard during certain actions...looped back to back...and played. This kind of music is underlied in the whole film. The other noticeable element is the use of a very wide angled lense to go really upclose to the characters face...to create this feeling of oneself in the mirror.

A comparison of drugs both legal and illegal...and the effects of both, the addiction being caused, the pain, the dreams....its all brilliantly put in there.....If you have seen trainspotting and thought that was a good movie...wait till you watch this...
